Modern Space, Japandi Style

This client loved their new home, but couldn’t help but feel it wasn’t quite “them”.

While this space was already well utilized in terms of configuration, we did find some areas to make improvements; the biggest of which being the shower area. As you can see in the before pictures, the shower area of this bathroom was built to fit the premade tub/shower unit – this means that they had to put an offset in the wall to fit the shower. So, not only was this shower roughly a foot more narrow than the rest of the bathroom, it also took away from the open, sleek vibe this client was going for. To remedy this, we took out the offset and recentered the window to fit the custom shower. From there we built a custom walnut flat panel vanity and replaced their large mirror with two recessed medicine cabinets

This client was inspired by the Japandi style. “Japandi” refers to the fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian aesthetics – think wabi-sabi meets hygge. This lends itself to a space that is simple, clean and warm. To achieve this, we had to be very thoughtful with materials, color schemes, and how the tile itself was laid. For the shower, we went with a vertical subway tile – the orientation creates both visual uniformity and accentuates the tall ceilings. To add more interest to the space, we added a large niche with penny round tile. For the floor, we went with 12 x 24 cement look tiles, which gives a modern but organic feeling. Finally, for the vanity we built a 6 drawer flat panel double sink unit, creating as much storage as possible and continuing with the overall clean line aesthetic of the space.

To tie this space together, we used matte black shower fixtures and faucets, modern frosted glass vanity lighting and pendants, simplistic bath accessories and a vintage runner to bring together our new clean lines with a timeless and warm visual and feeling

Making a Home Their Own

This client’s home had always been a space for hosting friends and a growing family, but it wasn’t reflective of their own style or taste. To make the biggest impact on the home, we focused on 3 key areas – the kitchen, the bathrooms and the foyer.

Like many kitchens of the early 2000s, this space was dominated by dark cabinets, vinyl sheet flooring and warm yellow tones. These features made the kitchen feel dark, heavy and closed off. While the homeowner didn’t want to completely reconfigure the floorplan, there were a lot of minor changes we could make in order to open up this space.
One of the best parts about this kitchen is that we kept a lot of the original foundation. The cabinets were originally built with high grade plywood and solid wood fronts and side panels. Using the original boxes allowed us to expedite the reconfiguration of the kitchen. We removed part of the cabinet faces and replaced then to reflect drawers rather than doors with pull out shelving. We removed the clunky cabinets over the range – these closed off the space visually and were inconvenient in terms of storage. Next, we tackled the island – originally this was used as a seated bar. This client rarely used the island’s bar seating, so as a better use of space, we extended the counter top and installed custom shallow depth cabinets where the seating once was. To improve the flow between the formal dining room and kitchen, we widened and centered the opening between the two spaces, allowing for more light and a more open feel and relocated and deepened the pantry. Finally, we added a coffee bar area and enclosed shelving to maximize the storage and function of the space!

Something that makes this space truly unique is its use of natural stone. For the countertops, our client went with a gorgeous honed quartzite – more durable than both marble and granite, quartzite is a gorgeous natural stone that features distinct veining, ranging from solid to crystalline. We went with a beautiful honed and detailed Calacatta backsplash as a focal point under the upper glass door cabinets. As for the floor, our client introduced us to a material we had never used before – Belgian Bluestone. This is a unique limestone imported from the southern region of Belgium. What makes this stone so unique is its history – which you can actually see on the stone! Embedded in this stone are ancient fossils, coral and calcite veins, which against the stormy gray of the natural stone is visually striking. We replaced all of the doors and drawer fronts with solid wood raised panels and sprayed all finishing items creating a soft and beautiful finish

As you can see from the before photos, this bathroom is very spacious, but awkwardly shaped. To maximize this space, we completely changed the layout and reframed the room, creating straight lines and removing the odd, angular shape of the old vanity wall that limited the layout. Once reframed, we were able to use the extra space for custom recessed cabinets, using dead space behind the wall and providing the clients the storage they didn’t know existed. From there, we went from the floor up! One of our favorite features of this space is the incredible marble herringbone floors – The timelessness of the marble instantly elevates the atmosphere, providing a sense of opulence that resonates throughout. Continuing with the shower, we removed the wall that closed off the shower and created an open feel with a marble bench providing seating and a place for the new glass to sit on, bringing in even more visibility and natural light. We used honed penny marble tile for the flooring and accent feature in the niche bringing in more personality without having to change the continuity of the marble bathroom as a whole. To tie the entire space together, we introduced champagne bronze and matte black finishes along with a beautiful custom-built blue green raised panel vanity complimenting the natural hues within the marble stone throughout—small details that make a big impact

Moving on to the foyer – as this is the first space seen when entering the home, we wanted to make sure it complimented the home well while still having its own personality. To do this, we focused on the stairs. To keep the space from becoming too heavy, we went with white stairs with wooden tops. This not only brightens the space, but creates visual interest! To highlight this further, we also put in a custom handrail that lends a sense of fun to the space. Finally, we installed a gorgeous, modern chandelier to bring the whole space together!

Withstanding the Elements

Some projects are just meant to be! We had been working on a midcentury kitchen remodel across the street from this home for several months, and we’d always look at this house and think “wow, that house is so cool”. Well, the universe must have heard us, because shortly after, the homeowners caught us outside and asked if we could take a look at their master bath project.

The house itself had burnt down in a big fire back in the 90’s, and when it was rebuilt it was constructed to be fireproof (hence the cinderblock walls and steel framing construction). It was a unique aesthetic and although the current homeowners loved the house as a whole, they were ready to update their master bathroom and create more of a space that suited their personal style.

The home has consistent characteristics throughout – steel frame windows, primarily cool tones, and unique artwork and treasures that had been collected through life. We wanted to create a space that felt updated yet still married to the rest of the home (which can be challenging for very specific spaces). We decided to go with a beautiful glass wave tile for the walls and a honed linear marble floor tile. When the light comes in through the ceiling window it illuminates the glass tile on the walls bringing new dimension to the space, and the linear marble tile fits right in with a more structured industrial yet organic feel. The vanity was a custom build which we built in-house and we finished it with a satin lacquer which has a lovely appearance and feel to it. The free-standing tub was custom with the two-tone finish, and we even added a hidden wall heater in the lower cabinet. Since the ceilings are so high in the bathroom, this small unit provides that little bit of early morning warmth when you get out of the shower or tub.

One of our favorite finishing features in this bathroom are the light fixtures. The industrial modern chandelier over the tub not only provides visual appeal and light, but it doesn’t obstruct or limit the natural light coming into the space; a key visual variable! The glass shades on the vanity lights cast a beautiful shadow on the walls bringing even more dimension to the space itself.

Overall, this was a really fun project and it was great to see cooler tones in a space without it looking all overly monotone. Natural components of glass and marble are a high contrast to the more industrial feel of the overall home yet fit in perfectly. Also, ceiling windows and extra tall walls for the win because, wow, do they make this space feel extra special!

After spending several years remodeling the majority of their home, this client was finally ready to tackle their hall bath.

While the space was fully functional, the homeowner had a few concerns: the shower, the vanity and natural lighting. For the shower, a corner unit felt far too small and clunky – using it was a chore. The vanity had enough space, but for a hall bath, it just took up too much space. And finally, the tiny window above the toilet just didn’t do anything for the space.
With all of this in mind, we knew what we had to do! First, we decided to reduce the size of the vanity from 4’ to 3’. This would allow us to move the toilet next to the vanity, freeing up the entire back wall for the shower. Finally, we would replace the tiny ventilation window with a larger window, extending almost the full length of the back wall, and installing a humidity sensor fan to take care of the steam from the shower

Now that the space was reconfigured with an entirely new floor plan, it was time for the fun part: design! For this project, our client already knew they wanted to use Terrazzo (which we were so excited about!). In the past, terrazzo had been notoriously difficult to install, as it was a pour in place material – meaning artisans would have to actually create the material in the space. Thankfully, it now comes in slab and tile form, making it much more accessible to clients and contractors alike! We decided to pair the terrazzo with a limestone tile.

This particular tile came in only one size – 4 x 16. While the proportions of this stone was lovely, the size would not work for the space. To remedy this, we trimmed down every tile to a 3 x 12 size which allowed all grout joints lined up with our 24”x24” terrazzo tile. This way, the client could get the exact stone and look they wanted without having to compromise the proportions and look of the space. Beyond this, the natural texture and colors play beautifully with the terrazzo, feeling very reminiscent of the Italian riviera (which is never a bad thing!).

To round out this bathroom, we went with high contrast modern accessories. For the shower, we went with dual shower heads, a classic and rain head for ultimate relaxation and function! For the vanity, we went with a custom flat panel oak design, matte black drawer pulls and faucet. Finally, to complete the bathroom, we went with a sleek and simple glass panel for the shower enclosure

The Spa Treatment

This was a special transformation for us; we’ve been working with this particular client and her family for over a decade on various renovations around the house. After years of fixing and enriching the family spaces of this home, she decided it was finally time to give her bathroom a makeover, and we couldn’t have been happier to make this transformation happen!

Before

Due to the L shape of the bathroom and the steep vaulted ceiling, the options for reconfiguring the space were somewhat limited. Overall, the client was pleased with the layout of the bathroom, so this didn’t end up being an issue for her. However, we did think we could improve at least a few aspects of this layout.

First off, we eliminated the track lighting and brought in feature lighting which complimented the design of the space. The soffit was dating and closing off the space so we decided to decrease the size of the soffit and installed two new crystal accent light fixtures above each sink. Our client also wanted more storage space – to do this, we got rid of the awkward dividing wall between the vanity and the tub and built a custom full height unit bringing plenty of space for towels and other bath accessories.

For this space, our client wanted something bright and feminine, a space that was truly her own! To achieve this, we went with 12×24 porcelain for the walls and a beautiful floral pattern marble for the shower floor and niches. We also went with a quartz countertop that complimented the wall tiles well, saving on cost and adding durability to the vanity! One of our favorite details of this bathroom are the niches; both the size and the beautiful marble flower backing make these stand outs in the space! We also love the custom cabinet doors – the shape and detail bring some English cottage charm to this otherwise modern bathroom! We love this combination of styles and think it suits our client perfectly!

Finally, the accessories! There was one thing this client needed in her bathroom and that was some SPARKLE! She had bedazzled lights in mind from the very beginning and we did not want to let her down! After finding the perfect overhead lighting, we wanted the space to dazzle even more, so we added crystal cabinet knobs to compliment the vanity lighting.

A Little Slice of Zen

A Little Slice of Zen

Not only is this one of our favorite bathroom transformations to date, but it also earned us Silver in the 2023 Kitchen and Bath Design Awards!

To start off, we removed the awkward dividing wall between the vanity and tub space (scroll to the bottom to see ‘before’ pictures!)with the toilet and shower space; this alone makes the bathroom feel much larger and allows more natural light to reach the space as a whole. We went with a beautiful custom-built rift cut white oak vanity. We get a lot of people that ask about this vanity and other current “trending” wood options, and white oak seems to be a consistently desired option. Now, you might be wondering what rift cut means. There are three options when cutting the trunk of the tree: You have a plain sawn, quarter sawn and rift sawn

Rift sawn is cut in a way that only uses a certain portion of the trunk lending it to the linear grain that you can see on this vanity. We find all of the white oak cuts to be beautiful and the nature of the wood has more of a blue pink hue compared to red oak which has a more golden, yellow and red undertone.

Moving forward, we went with a vertical subway pattern that carried over behind the tub and around the window (going full height tile is always a good choice as it elevates the space as a whole), brushed gold faucets and a beautiful free-standing tub. The natural and earthy woven pendant brings it all together.

A lot of people have a hard time with finishing décor, wondering if they can mix and match light fixtures and hardware and we say: absolutely, go for it! There is a lot that goes in to mixing and matching but when you get it right, it makes the statement pieces stand out rather than blend in. The vanity sconces are more modern-industrial while the pendant is boho and they totally compliment one another! Just like fashion, don’t be afraid to step outside of the box, just make sure it’s the right balance and you’ll have a stunning and unique space.

Our latest master bathroom remodel brings out all of the the cool and calming vibes. We are loving the huge walk in shower with a combination of textured tile, stacked glass tile, quartz and porcelain 2×2’s accompanied with a floating bench for total relaxation. We also got rid of the outdated jacuzzi tub and added a large custom linen closest, something this family was unfortunately missing in their home’s original layout. A custom double vanity to match makes this bathroom come together perfectly

Diamond Bar Bath Remodel

Can you believe this amazing remodel? With this homeowner’s design, we took this drab outdated space and turned it into a modern dream! We started out this project by doing a complete demo of the shower, floor, and vanity. We replaced the outdated floor tile with clean, sleek, 20 x 20 porcelain tiles. Next, we mirrored the floor by using the same 20 x 20 tiles in black to keep the lines clean and the space geometric. What really makes this space incredible is the beautiful shower! Complete with a rain head, a relocated drain, and a sizable niche, this shower exudes function and fashion! The black and white tiles give the shower a nice contrast and gives the space a modern feel. The floating vanity and medicine cabinet add a futuristic element to the bathroom and tie the space together. We loved working with this client and trying something new!

Rancho Cucamonga Bathroom Remodel

This was a fun project! This couple was looking to remodel and update their master bathroom. The Jacuzzi tub was bulky and they didn’t like the appearance of the dated white tile counter top and gold appliance. We completely gutted the bathroom and started from scratch. We extended the shower area and also added in a bench which was a big plus for our clients. We also got a sleek free standing tub that provides a classic yet modern appearance while taking up less space. A custom built vanity and double mirrors to match along with a white quartz counter top and porcelain “wood” planks make this bathroom calming and up-to-date. Needless to say our clients were very happy with the finished product and so are we!
