A fire can start by a stove left unattended, a gas leak, a burning candle, electrical failure and dozens of other reasons that seem impossible. Fire and smoke will penetrate into the cavities of the structure and cause hidden, lingering damage and odor. Anderson provides fire and smoke damage repair.

After a fire the first thing to do is contact your insurance company, this will get the process underway which may include temporary housing, securing the home and additional living expense funds needed for this unexpected crisis. Next the fire department will deem if it’s safe to enter the structure, if deemed safe you need to be prepared by protecting yourself. Depending on the severity of the fire you will need at minimum a respirator to filter out the toxins floating in the air, if the fire has engulfed the home consider a disposable jump suit, rubber boots and rubber gloves.

Homes built before 1980 were constructed with asbestos and lead based materials which become airborne and are known to be a health risk. If you choose to enter the home keep it to a minimum; gather photos, jewelry and family mementos that cannot be replaced and remove them from the structure if possible. The next step is to call Anderson Reconstruction and let us take over from there. Below are a few of the steps we take to secure your property and walk you through the restoration process.

Assess the property for what type of security measures will be needed.

Board up windows, doors and roof penetration as needed to prevent further damage and vandalism.

Assess the personal property as needed to determine if a pack out will be needed. If so all items are photographed, labeled, inventoried and respectfully packed and moved to our secure facility for further evaluations, cleaning and storage.

For a light smoke damage the walls, ceilings, duct work and other areas of the home need to immediately be cleaned and deodorized-this helps prevent the odor from “setting” into fabrics and soft surface items. Some smoke is highly acidic and will start to deteriorate metal, stone and other house hold items.

We will meet with you and your insurance carrier, create a detailed estimate of the visible fire damage and at this point meet with the local building department to prepare a plan for the reconstruction.

These are the first step of the fire damage restoration process and Anderson Reconstruction will be at your side to answer questions and guide you through this difficult time.
